Hilo Hawaii hosts the most renowned hula competition, Merrie Monarch, which draws hula lovers from around the world to Hilo during Easter week. Hilo town has year round festivals and pageantry such as the Royal Order of King Kamehameha celebration, the County Fair, the Hilo PowWow, Polynesian dance and Hawaiian music festivals.

Downtown Hilo is lined with gift shops, clothing stores, restaurants, and treats like Hawaiian shave ice. Hilo's Farmers market is at the corner of Kamehameha and Mano streets and the Band Stand in downtown Hilo is used for celebrations and performances. Parades through downtown are a common sight during the year.

Hilo Hawaii is surrounded by waterfalls filled by East Hawaii's frequent and refreshing rain. The famed Rainbow Falls on the Wailuku River is located just above downtown Hilo. Peepee Falls and Boiling Pots in Wailuku River State park is a lesser known series of water cascades and lava pools.

Hilo Hawaii sits below Mauna Kea mountain and above Hilo Bay. Banyan peninsula, which juts into Hilo Bay, hosts Hilo's hotels, Liliuokalani Gardens, and is covered with Banyan trees named for famous people. During the year Hilo Bay hosts Outrigger canoe paddling races.
