The week of 2011 Merrie Monarch started with the free Ho'olaule'a (music festival) on Sunday in Hilo's Civic Auditorium. Hula Halau's from around the island performed their dances with grace and aloha. It is a wonderful way to experience the Hula Halaus of the Big Island and enjoy their hula and meles.
The event started with Hawaiian chants by students of Ha'akumalae, Kekuhi Keali'ikanaka'oleohaililani and Manaiakalani Kalua.
The Halau Hula Ke 'Olu Makani O Mauna Loa dancers being trained by Kumu Meleana Manuel performed next.
Kumu Emery Aceret and his Halau Nae Pua O Uluhaimalama performed.
Kumu Johnny Lum Ho and dancers from his Halau O Ka Ua Kani Lehua gave fantastic performances.
